Diving the Florida Keys was an unbelievable experience
Well I finally took the plunge into the underwater world and I'm now a certified scuba diver. I can't believe it. I recently came to South Florida for a two week vacation in June and I had the most unbelievable experience learning how to dive in the keys.
Originally, I came down to South Florida to vacation with a good friend of mine who lives in Miami. I was planning on hitting the club scene and the beach. But I realized after three days of that I was bored, plus my buddy worked these terrible shifts at his restaurant job. Basically I was cruising Miami alone when my buddy was at work...enough said.
So, I googled a bunch of things to do in South Florida like kite boarding, jet skiing, snorkeling and scuba diving. I didn't realize that Key Largo was the diving capital of the world and Key Largo is only an hour from my buddies place. That was it...I was going scuba diving. But I needed to get certified.
I found this great instructor in Key Largo at www.divingflorida.org. We setup the first diving class on Saturday. I basically had two weekends to get this PADI certification done in the keys. The instructor at diving florida was very accommodating to my schedule which was the first sign that this whole scuba certification thing was going to go well...considering I'm doing this on a whim.
We spent my first morning in the pool learning about all Scuba Equipment and getting familiar with it. This was my first time ever breathing underwater with a tank....very cool. After we went through all the skills needed in the pool, we then packed it all up and headed for my first Open Water ocean dive. Holly crap....a little scary.
We did two dives that afternoon at the Christ of the Abyss off the coast of Key Largo. Unbelievable experience...check out some of these photo's: http://www.flickr.com/photos/divingflorida/
The Christ statue was really cool, but I was nervous being it was my first time in open water with scuba equipment. All in all my first weekend was surreal. My instructor at Diving Florida was great and I would highly recommend him.
For my next article I'll tell you all about my final dives at the molasses reef in Key Largo. This is consider the best reef to dive in Key Largo, possibly all of the keys.
