Scuba Diving - Overview
Scuba diving offers people the opportunity to observe life below the water's surface in oceans and lakes. Scuba is an acronym that stands for self contained underwater breathing apparatus. Scuba divers carry a tank filled with compressed air on their backs. This allows them to breathe underwater.
In the early years of diving, the divers relied on air being pumped from the surface to them. Being able to a carry their own Air Tank gives the diver greater freedom underwater. Scuba Diving Equipment lets the diver stay underwater longer than with breath-holding techniques. Between 1942 and 1946, Emile Gagnan and Jacques-Yves Cousteau developed the Aqua Lung. It was the first commercial scuba set.
The Aqua Lung was a open circuit unit. Compressed air is inhaled from a tank and then exhaled into the water. This device used pressure valves to deliver the air supply to the diver. There are numerous reasons why people Scuba Dive. In the 1980's and 1990's scuba diving became a very popular recreational sport. Some types of recreational diving are cave diving, wreck diving, ice diving and deep diving. If you are new to scuba diving, it is highly recommended that you take scuba classes.
Diving classes are designed to familiarize students with the the world below the water and to practice techniques that are required to be an efficient diver. A good diving class should give students plenty of opportunities to ask questions and to practice new skills. There will be classroom work, pool work and Open Water work. At the end of the course, be prepared for an open water test. Diving can be a relaxing experience so if you are a thrill seeker, diving may not be for you. To be a great diver, you need to have focus, organization and clear thinking.
