The Simple Guide to Snorkeling - Scuba Dive Resort in the Philippines

The Simple Guide to Snorkeling
Explore several coral reefs near Dumaguete Philippines Beach Resort and spend the day snorkeling from a local bangka boat at several local reefs. Monarch Sands beach resort in Dumaguete Philippines offers group snorkeling trips to various coral formations, including their Apo Island snorkel tour. Snorkeling doesn't have to be an intimidating experience for first-timers. All you need is a knowledgeable guide and this simple step-by-step guide:
1. The mask is the most important gear you'll have in your snorkeling arsenal. Be certain that when you put it on the mask fits your face. Make sure that no water or air leaks inside by adjusting and tightening the straps of your mask. It should make a perfect seal around your eyes and nose. The straps should sit firmly at the widest part of your head towards the back of your head. If it's too low water may leak in. Adjust the straps accordingly if water does start to seep inside the mask. Then, position the snorkel tube in front of your ear.
2. Fins are also important as they help propel you easily through the water. Choose fins that have a snug fit as they can expand when submerged in water. If they're too tight it can hurt your toes and may cause you to cramp up while snorkeling. If the fins slip off your heels, they're too big.
3. Before going under water practice breathing with the snorkel tube through your mouth. This is to familiarize you with the breathing technique used when snorkeling. Don't bite on the mouthpiece or your jaw will get really sore. The masks should stay reasonably dry on the inside. To avoid getting water in the tube, make sure that you do not dive down too far and submerge the whole snorkel tube in water. If you do get some water inside, simply raise your head above the water and pull the tube or the mask and let the water drain. You can also leave a bit of water inside the mask to help in defogging the lenses.
4. To use your fins the right way, kick from the hip and keep your knees and ankles relaxed to prevent cramps. Fins should always remain below the water line. Don't use the bicycle-type kick as it creates more splash that might scare away the fish. Instead, think of your fin (most especially the tip) as a gracefully flowing mermaid tail. And once you master this skill, you'll start to notice that your fins propel you through the water without resistance. Done correctly, you will hardly need to use your arms and can let them rest easily at your side. You can also fold your hands over your lower back. And enjoy an unobstructed view of the sea floor.
